Filming Broadcast Interviews for A&E Network
Creative Images makes promotional and corporate video, but we also shoot for broadcast. Recently, A&E out of New York hired us to film interviews and b-roll for a crime series.
The director, producer, and interviewer stayed in New York, 1,000 miles away. They watched and directed the whole shoot over Zoom.
How the remote feed worked
I ran audio from the subject's wireless mic into my camera, then fed the camera's HDMI output into the laptop running Zoom through a small HDMI-to-USB capture device - about twice the size of a flash drive. The team in New York saw and heard exactly what I was recording - a clean feed, straight from the camera.
They didn't wait for the interviews to start, either. During setup, they joined the Zoom feed to watch my progress and give direction before anyone sat down in front of the camera. By the time each subject arrived, New York had already seen and approved the shot.
The subjects - prosecutors and detectives — looked at the laptop while they spoke. This kept the eye-line natural, as if the interviewer sat across from them.
Finding a new backdrop
The show called for a courthouse setting, but the local courthouse was under a major remodel. Instead, we used the entrance to a hotel ballroom - a space built for weddings, with dark wood throughout and its own entrance apart from the rest of the hotel.
On shoot day, the space sat empty. No foot traffic, no noise, and full control of the light. That control mattered, because the team wanted the interviews dark and moody. I shaped the lighting and framing to match, and adjusted as notes came in from New York.
Delivery
Within a few hours after the shoot, I sent the team links to download the raw camera files. They went straight into editing in New York.
